Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour
The cause closest to King’s heart is literacy, which he has supported through the various initiatives of non-profit organizations including: Spread the Word Nevada and The Public Education Foundation’s Clark County READS program. For years, King has visited local elementary schools to spread the importance of literacy to valley students.
In February 2011 he decided to do even more and launched “Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour,” promoting childhood literacy and providing more reading opportunities. With the Literacy Tour, King has increased public awareness about literacy issues and rallied local community organizations to get involved to help foster the love of reading among valley children, particularly in at-risk schools.
The tour kicked-off in February 2011 with a book drive held in conjunction with the Las Vegas Wranglers hockey team, Plaza Books and Michael’s Books. The goal was to raise 2,100 books that would go straight into the hands of children at four local at-risk schools. Together, they exceeded that goal by raising 3,100 books. King appeared at each school to read stories, perform a few tricks and deliver a book to each student to take a home. For many kids, this is the first book that they can call their own.
Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour also partnered with The Las Vegas Springs Preserve and KSNV Ch. 3 who produced a PSA promoting a book drive in March of 2011. The PSA ran at least twice daily throughout March 2011.
In July 2011, Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour spread the joy of reading overseas as a group of Girl Scouts distributed books to children in India on Mac King’s behalf while completing several service projects in throughout the county.
During Fall 2011 and 2012 Mac King and Winder Farms, a local home delivery grocery service, partnered for the “Delivering Magic” book drive and contest that rallied the community together to support local education.
The tour continued in February 2012 with Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour: Nevada Reading Week 2012, joining forces once again with the Las Vegas Wranglers and The Las Vegas Springs Preserve. By partnering with other organizations, King’s efforts have resulted in increased community involvement and awareness on the importance of childhood literacy in Southern Nevada and overseas.
To date, Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour has raised more than 5,000 books for children in the Clark County School District. This tour is set to continue in 2013; kicking off the year with Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour: Nevada Reading Week 2013 where King will hand deliver books to children in five local elementary schools.
